Effects of Visual Loss in the Corpus Callosum in Rats Subjected to Sensory-Motor Training International Journal of Morphology
Suazo Galdames,Iván; López Farías,Bernarda; Cantín López,Mario.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the changes in the dimensions of different portions of the corpus callosum in rats subjected to sensory-motor enriched environment with visual loss. We used 24 adult SpragueDawley rats divided into three groups: G1 (n = 7) control, G2 (n = 10) subjected to sensory-motor stimulation, and G3 (n = 7) subjected to sensory-motor stimulation followed by visual loss by retinal injury. The brains were extracted and the corpus callosum was divided into three parts of equal length, corresponding to the genu, mid-body, and splenium, and the callosal area was determined according to the method described by Aboitiz et al. (1992). We observed normal performance among animals in G2 and G3 in the enriched environment with a...

GABA-induced inactivation of Cebus apella V2 neurons: effects on orientation tuning and direction selectivity BJMBR
Jansen-Amorim,A.K.; Fiorani,M.; Gattass,R..
We investigated the GABA-induced inactivation of V2 neurons and terminals on the receptive field properties of this area in an anesthetized and paralyzedCebus apella monkey. Extracellular single-unit activity was recorded using tungsten microelectrodes in a monkey before and after pressure-injection of a 0.25 or 0.5 M GABA solution. The visual stimulus consisted of a bar moving in 8 possible directions. In total, 24 V2 neurons were studied before and after blocker injections in 4 experimental sessions following GABA injection into area V2. A group of 10 neurons were studied over a short period. An additional 6 neurons were investigated over a long period after the GABA injection. A third group of 8 neurons were studied over a very long period. Overall,...

Horizontal projections of area 17 in Cebus monkeys: metric features, and modular and laminar distribution BJMBR
Amorim,A.K.J.; Picanço-Diniz,C.W..
Metric features and modular and laminar distributions of intrinsic projections of area 17 were studied in Cebus apella. Anterogradely and retrogradely labeled cell appendages were obtained using both saturated pellets and iontophoretic injections of biocytin into the operculum. Laminar and modular distributions of the labeled processes were analyzed using Nissl counterstaining, and/or cytochrome oxidase and/or NADPH-diaphorase histochemistry. We distinguished three labeled cell types: pyramidal, star pyramidal and stellate cells located in supragranular cortical layers (principally in layers IIIa, IIIb a, IIIb ß and IIIc). Three distinct axon terminal morphologies were found, i.e.,...

Interhemispheric connections between primary visual areas: beyond the midline rule BJMBR
Houzel,J.-C.; Carvalho,M.L.; Lent,R..
In the last five years, a number of detailed anatomical, electrophysiological, optical imaging and simulation studies performed in a variety of non-human species have revealed that the functional organization of callosal connections between primary visual areas is more elaborate than previously thought. Callosal cell bodies and terminals are clustered in columns whose correspondence to features mapped in the visual cortex, such as orientation and ocularity, are starting to be understood. Callosal connections are not restricted to the vertical midline representation nor do they establish merely point-to-point retinotopic correspondences across the hemispheres, as traditionally believed. In addition, anatomical studies have revealed the existence of an...

Methylmercury intoxication and histochemical demonstration of NADPH-diaphorase activity in the striate cortex of adult cats BJMBR
Oliveira,R.B.; Gomes-Leal,W.; do-Nascimento,J.L.M.; Picanço-Diniz,C.W..
The effects of methylmercury (MeHg) on histochemical demonstration of the NADPH-diaphorase (NADPH-d) activity in the striate cortex were studied in 4 adult cats. Two animals were used as control. The contaminated animals received 50 ml milk containing 0.42 µg MeHg and 100 g fish containing 0.03 µg MeHg daily for 2 months. The level of MeHg in area 17 of intoxicated animals was 3.2 µg/g wet weight brain tissue. Two cats were perfused 24 h after the last dose (group 1) and the other animals were perfused 6 months later (group 2). After microtomy, sections were processed for NADPHd histochemistry procedures using the malic enzyme method. Dendritic branch counts were performed from camera lucida drawings for control and intoxicated animals (N = 80). Average,...

Removal of the cortical projections alters expression of NOS in the different cell types of the superficial layers of the superior colliculus in rats Anais da ABC (AABC)
TENÓRIO,FRANK; GIRALDI-GUIMARÃES,ARTHUR; MENDEZ-OTERO,ROSALIA.
Nitric oxide has several biological roles and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) is expressed in the nervous system, and co-localizes with NADPH-diaphorase. The superficial layers of the superior colliculus (SC), which receive retinal and cortical inputs, present NADPH-d staining in a sub-population of neurons that include all cell types. We have previously shown, by NADPH-diaphorase, that eye enucleation alters the intracellular distribution of NOS. Here, we studied the effect of cortical ablation on NOS expression by neurons in collicular superficial layers. Our results show that cortical ablation alters the proportion of different NOS-positive cell types, but not the intracellular distribution of the enzyme.

The parietal association cortex of the rat Biol. Res.
TORREALBA,FERNANDO; VALDÉS,JOSÉ LUIS.
Spatial cognition is a complex higher function in mammals and is involved in a variety of tasks that can be explored in the laboratory. In this review we will discuss the role of the posterior parietal/anteromedial cortex of rodents, also known as the parietal association cortex, and the hippocampal formation in spatial navigation. We will also discuss other higher associational functions of the posterior parietal/anteromedial cortex as they relate to Dr. Pinto-Hamuy's contribution to understanding behavioral functions.
